English Language Arts is more than reading and writing.  While those remain a major focal point, ELA is understanding many forms of communication, including listening, speaking, viewing and interpreting.  Almost any format that asks us as humans to assess the information shared may be used for study, such as movies, images, music, cartoons, etc.  Still we find the best learning and strongest discussions come from reading fiction and poetry, nonfiction and plays.

Truly, what inspires us as teachers, what we hope to inspire in our students, is the ability to analyze, to recognize carefully chosen information that will lead to deeper understanding and new ways of viewing the world around us.  The skills we develop go beyond being stronger readers and better writers, but help students to think about what people say, how they act and understand motivation in the real world of communication.
