French Language Arts (FLA)

French Language Arts (FLA) is the core language and literature curriculum designed for students in the French Immersion program. It is distinct from "French as a Second Language" (FSL), which is an elective for students in the English stream, and "Français," which is the curriculum for Francophone schools.

The FLA program aims to develop "functional fluency," allowing students to live, work, and study in French while fostering a sense of Francophone identity and culture.

French Language Arts Course Sequencing Chart

FLA

French Language Arts 10-1/10-2 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite for FLA 10-1: 60% in FLA 9

FLA 10-1 is the more academically challenging course, intended for students planning to pursue university studies, especially those with an interest in humanities, arts, or communication. It places a strong emphasis on literary analysis and sophisticated communication. Students will be permitted to challenge French as a Second Language (FSL) 10 before the end of the semester.

French Language Arts 10-2 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite for FLA 10-2: Less than 60% in FLA 9

FLA 10-2 is designed for students who want to continue developing their French language skills but may be pursuing general studies or applied programs after high school. While still rigorous, it places a greater emphasis on practical communication and applying skills to real-world contexts, rather than deep literary theory. Students will be permitted to challenge French as a Second Language (FSL) 10 before the end of the semester.

French Language Arts 20-1 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite for FLA 20-1: 60% in FLA 10

FLA 20-1 is designed for students aiming for competitive university programs that require strong analytical and sophisticated communication skills. French Language Arts 20-2 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite for FLA 20-2: Less than 60% in FLA 10-1

FLA 20-2 is designed for students who want to maintain their French fluency while pursuing general studies or career pathways. The emphasis is on comprehension and communication in real-world, functional contexts.

Students will be permitted to challenge French as a Second Language (FSL) 20 before the end of the semester.

French Language Arts 30-1 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in FLA 20-1

FLA 30-1 demands a high level of analytical skill, complex written expression, and sophisticated literary and cultural understanding. Students will be permitted to challenge FSL 30 before the end of the semester. As this is a diploma course, students will write a diploma exam worth 30% of their final grade.

French Language Arts 30-2 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite: 50% in FLA 20-2

FLA 30-2 prioritizes advanced functional communication and practical comprehension. Students will have the opportunity to challenge FSL 30 before the end of the semester. There is no diploma exam for this course.

Both FLA 30-1 and FLA 30-2 are recognized by Campus Saint Jean.

Please Note

Only 25 credits from any combination of languages may be used towards a high school diploma. This means that if a student takes FLA 10, 20 & 30 and challenges French 10, 20 & 30 they will earn 30 credits, of which only 25 will count towards the 100 credit requirement for a high school diploma.
