French as a Second Language (FSL)
The French as a Second Language (FSL) program is designed for students who are beginners in the French language and are typically only exposed to it in the classroom. The overall purpose of the FSL program is to equip students with functional communicative competence in French and to foster an appreciation for Francophone cultures.
French (FSL) 10 (5 credits)
No prerequisite
FSL 10 is designed for students who have little to no previous exposure to French or who are transitioning from an elementary or junior high FSL program. The overall purpose is to establish the most basic foundations of communicative competence in French and to foster initial enthusiasm for the language and Francophone cultures.
French (FSL) 20 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% in FSL 10
FSL 20 builds directly upon the basic communication skills established in French 10, significantly expanding the student's communicative competence, grammatical knowledge, and cultural awareness. The overarching purpose is to transition students from survival communication to functional communication, enabling them to handle more complex social and practical situations in French.
French (FSL) 30 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% in FSL 20
The purpose of FSL 30 is to provide students with the confidence and ability to communicate effectively in basic real-world situations and to continue language learning independently after graduation.
Please Note:
- French speaking students can challenge these courses by writing the final exam for each course (10, 20 and 30) in sequential order. These challenges can be arranged with the FSL teacher and can result in earning 15 credits.
- Only 25 credits from any combination of languages may be used towards a high school diploma. This means if they enroll in French 10, 20 & 30 and Spanish 10, 20 & 30 they will earn 30 credits, of which only 25 will count towards the 100 credit requirement for a high school diploma.
