Spanish Language & Culture
Spanish is the official language of 21 different countries and one of the top four most spoken languages worldwide, with over 400 million native speakers, including many tropical and affordable tourist destinations. The Spanish Language and Culture program is designed to introduce students to the Spanish language and to the rich cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. The program's overarching purpose is to provide students with the communicative competence necessary to interact effectively in basic Spanish and to foster an informed appreciation for the vast range of Hispanic cultures globally.
Spanish Language and Culture 10 (5 credits)
No prerequisite
Spanish Language and Culture 10 is designed for students who are beginners in the language and are starting with little to no previous knowledge of Spanish. The overall purpose is to establish the most basic foundations of communicative competence in Spanish and to introduce students to the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Spanish Language and Culture 20 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% in Spanish Language and Culture 10, 65% or higher recommended
Spanish Language and Culture 20 builds significantly upon the foundational skills introduced in Spanish 10, aiming to expand the student's communicative competence, grammatical accuracy, and cultural knowledge. The overarching purpose is to transition students from basic survival communication to functional and sustained communication, enabling them to handle a wider variety of social and practical situations in Spanish.
Spanish Language and Culture 30 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% in Spanish Language and Culture 20, 65% or higher recommended.
Spanish Language and Culture provides students with the confidence and advanced skills to communicate effectively and appropriately across a broad range of authentic contexts, integrating linguistic proficiency with deepening cultural literacy. Credit awarded in Spanish 30 indicates to post secondary institutions that the student is prepared to enter second year (200 level) coursework with competence.
