Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)

Prerequisite: HCS3000 (offered as part of the CALM course)

RAP allows high school students in Alberta to begin their apprenticeship in one of the province's designated trades before graduation. Students in RAP are simultaneously full-time high school students and registered apprentices.

This program gives students a significant head start on their career by allowing them to earn both high school credits and certified apprenticeship hours. The student might work as a RAP apprentice for a semester, for half of each school day, for one or two days per week, or during summers, holidays and weekends.

RAP courses are trade-specific and must be taken sequentially (e.g.,Pipefitting 15, Pipefitting 25, Pipefitting 35).  A student can earn 5 credits at the 15 level, 15 credits at the 25 level and 20 credits at the 35 level.

Students can earn up to 40 high school credits toward their diploma (1 credit for every 25 hours of work). Students can bank up to 1,000 hours of on-the-job training toward the required hours for their trade certification.

It is possible for successful RAP students to complete the on-the-job hours required for their first year of apprenticeship while still in high school.

RAP apprentices must be paid at least the current Alberta minimum wage by their employer.

The student is responsible for finding an approved employer in a designated trade who is willing to take them on as a RAP apprentice under the supervision of a certified Journeyperson. The RAP placement must be approved by the RAP Coordinator.
