Work Experience
Work Experience (15, 25, 35)
Pre-requisite: HCS3000 (offered as part of the CALM course)
The Work Experience Program allows eligible Alberta high school students to earn high school credits for work they perform on the job. The program is designed to provide students with practical, hands-on experience and help them explore career interests. The job can be either paid or volunteer.
The purpose of this program is to familiarize students with the world of work. Real-life resumes and interviews can help them land a quality job, while customized skill and safety training give students the opportunity to excel at their work site.
Credits, Marks & Evaluation
- Students earn one credit per 25 hours of work
- Credits are awarded only once 75 hours of work have been completed, September to May 31 (3 credits)
Summer work Experience goes from the middle of June until August. - Students may earn up to 30 credits in work experience.
- Work Ex 15 - 10 credits maximum
- Work Ex 25 - 10 credits maximum
- Work Ex 35 - 10 credits maximum
- Courses must be completed in this order, however, variable credits may be earned at each level
(Ex. Work Ex 15 - 4 credits earned, Work Ex 25 - 6 credits earned, Work Ex 35 - 10 credits earned.) - Students can use up to 15 Work Ex credits towards diploma requirements.
- Student evaluations will be completed by the employer in consultation with the Off-Campus Coordinator.
Start-up Process
- Complete HCS 3000 (or Workplace Readiness 10-4)
- Acquire a work experience placement (paid or volunteer)
- Complete the following forms
- Off-Campus Education Agreement- student, parent, employer (provided by teacher)
- Off-Campus Learning plan (provided by teacher)
- Off-Campus Coordinator will contact the employer to arrange for a site safety inspection. The employer or supervisor must be present. The student is not required to be present at the Sit Safety Inspection. Sites are only approved if the work environment is deemed safe; adequate training, injury prevention, and hazard control processes are in place. At this time, employers will also be informed of procedures for WCB and the evaluation of student employees.
Ongoing
- Students are responsible for completing a monthly timesheet (provided by the teacher). The timesheet should be handed in to the Off-Campus Coordinator at the end of every month. The timesheet must be signed by the employer prior to handing it in.
- On-going supervision of the student is required. This may take the form of a phone call, email, text, or visit by the Off- Campus Coordinator. Work site availability and access will be considered when communicating. Site inspections may be required at more frequent intervals depending on the type of work environment in which the student is placed.
Students are responsible for finding their own job. The worksite must be approved by the Work Experience coordinator to ensure it meets safety and educational standards.
